He raped her and won the lottery, what did she do?

I caught BBC breakfast this morning and heard an amazing story of a truly inspirational woman called Shirley Woodman MBE who 24 years ago was attacked by a serial rapist who damaged the lives of several women. Despite being given life in prison 15 years later he was out on remand bought a lottery ticket and won £7 million.

Horrified by this news Mrs Woodman decided to take him to court for damages.

This is where the story of her inspiration starts. Because of the law at the time statues of limitations stated that you had to take someone to court within 6 years of a sexual assault taking place, as 15 years had passed she really had no legal redress. In her late-70s by this time and with the support of her daughter, the Police and a journalist she decided to take on the law and won!

That was back in 2008 and now the law on sexual attack compensation allows for the time limit to be extended in the case of serious assault.

At the time of taking on the law Mrs Woodman was told she had a 99 to 1% chance she would lose. Even with a 1% chance of winning she decided it was worth going after.

When asked whether she considered this something that would be too stressful to take on (she was in her late-70s after all) Shirley said

Throughout life we set ourselves little challenges and they can be simple, just things along the way, and we go along and when we succeeded the feelings of success is sort of minor. But if you choose to try to change the impossible, which is what we were trying to do and if you do achieve it the success is so great, particularly at this stage, at late in my life. Because we managed to change the law, because we changed the statue of limitations, it has empowered so many people and I feel proud that I have been able to do this for other people.
Mrs Shirley Woodman MBE

The amount of compensation she received was not disclosed and Mrs Woodman gave all the money away anonymously to charity so they won’t even know it was from her.

It was her daughter who applied for Shirley to receive the MBE without her knowledge. During the trial and even while fighting the law Shirley had kept her identity a secret being known only as Mrs A – a legal choice that victims of abuse have to protect their identity. Her daughter felt that her mother should be recognised for what she had achieved while she was still alive so encouraged her to waive her right to anonymity, which she agreed to do.

I am so happy that Mrs Shirley Woodman MBE gave up that right and is now talking about her experience and her journey. It was a brave one and she deserves the recognition and being awarded an MBE in the 2012 Queen’s New Year Honours for services to the community in Yorkshire.

Inspirational quotes to help you overcome obstacles & get through hard times

I have just watched a program about the great divide in America between those who have and those who are struggling to make ends meet during the recession. It was very sad to watch and reminded me of my own challenges during 2008/2009, although I always had support financially and people to lean on, which I know made me very lucky. One family struggled to find $250 to pay so they didn’t get their power cut off and my heart went out to them.

One thing I did to remind myself that ‘this too will pass’ was to read inspirational quotes and also to read autobiographies. Knowing people had been through major challenges and succeeded helped me keep going when things got tough. Being a single mum means I don’t have another adult in the house to talk over my worries with although I am blessed enough to have a few people I trusted enough to talk it all through.

So today I wanted to provide a few inspirational quotes to help you overcome obstacles and all I will say is stay strong… this too will pass.

“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, failure, suffering, struggle, and loss, and have found their way out of the depths of thier challenges. These people have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern for others. Beautiful people do not just happen; they evolve.” Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

“Defeat may test you; it need not stop you. If at first you don’t succeed, try another way. For every obstacle there is a solution. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. The greatest mistake is giving up. Unknown”

”We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey” Miyazawa Kenji

“For a long time it seemed to me that real life was about to begin, but there was always some obstacle in the way. Something had to be got through first, some unfinished business; time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”  Bette Howland

”If you know someone who tries to drown their sorrows, you might tell them sorrows know how to swim” Jackson Brown, Jr.

“To every obstacle oppose patience, perseverance and soothing language.” Thomas Jefferson

“We must accept finite disappointment but we must never lose infinite hope.”  Martin Luther King Jnr

“The greater the difficulty, the more glory in surmounting it.” Epictetus

“Lots of people limit their possibilities by giving up easily. Never tell yourself this is too much for me. It’s no use. I can’t go on. If you do you’re licked, and by your own thinking too. Keep believing and keep on keeping on.”  Norman Vincent Peale

“We can’t change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand. If I’m not as depressed as you think I should be, I’m sorry to disappoint you.” Randy Pausch

Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling, as in all careers of importance, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats. Yet each struggle, each defeat, sharpens your skills and strengths, your courage and your endurance, your ability and your confidence and thus each obstacle is a comrade-in-arms forcing you to become better… or quit. Each rebuff is an opportunity to move forward; turn away from them, avoid them, and you throw away your future.   Og Mandino

What’s the one thing that you will find behind every successful person who pulled themselves through a major challenge? They never gave up. Don’t quit. Keep believing. If you believe in the power of prayer use it to help you share your worries – sometimes just talking out loud about it helps and you might even find that a solution or two presents itself.

Progress not perfection image and audio

It really will help your personal growth if you spend time printing off and hanging up images that remind you to stay focused. For everyone who loves images and words (you can click the link to read my blog post self confidence means progress not perfection) or instead of words I hope the image below helps.

I also added it as a PDF to SlideShare (see below) – in that PDF I mention my ongoing ‘fight’ to overcome my dark moods. For months I’d be unhappy with everything in my life. My relationship, my job, my personal life (or lack of it) and the first thing I wanted to do when I began to build my own self confidence (back in 1991) was to look at being more happy with my life.

I was reading, listening to and watching a range of different self-help material as well as attending workshops and after five years I was still experiencing these moods. The only difference now is they didn’t last as long as they used to. The more I worked on myself the less I experienced the torment of them until they subsided all together.

I can still experience them now if I allow them to overtake me – challenges in life never stop because you are more confident but you have a better way of dealing with them -  now I am much better at stopping them in their tracks. Instead I will start by asking myself questions, which will get to the heart of what is bothering me and sorting it out from there.

In the past when these moods threatened to return and once I had the life tools to manage them better I did things like repeat my affirmations and remind myself that I love and approve of myself (a lot of times I had to forgive myself for not believing that enough!) I then spent time seeing a more confident me in my visualization until I felt better.

Sometimes just putting on some music and dancing helped, phoning a friend who made me laugh or focusing my mind on doing something I enjoyed.  I found volunteering and helping others really helped to pull me out of my own self-pity. I had a variety of tools and I managed these moods the best way I knew how.

What I really wish I had back then was emotional freedom technique (EFT) – because when I discovered that gem everything changed. You don’t have to experience dark moods for years like I did. You can work on them and help yourself through them using the EFT tapping procedure. I will be talking more about that in future blog posts.

Jazzie B On Self Esteem and Confidence

I watched this great video over at the BBC on confidence and self esteem that I thought I would share.

Soul ll Soul’s Jazzie B on self-esteem and confidence – JazzieB was part of Jamie Olivers dream school and his views on confidence are great to listen to.

He was lucky enough to have his confidence instilled in him while he was young and that helped him succeed in life.  The impact of living without self confidence from a young age is an area I am passionate about and we need to be careful about the messages we place in the young minds of children who will believe what adults tell them about who they are.
