An ALIVE List: The Small Things That Make an Ordinary Day Feel Like Yours

Most days do not go wrong. They just go quiet. Same route, same replies, same evening, until the weeks blur into one long, forgettable stretch and you catch yourself wondering when life started feeling like going through the motions. Nothing is broken. You have simply stopped noticing the small things that were always there.

An ALIVE List is the fix, and it is deliberately small. It is your running list of the little things that make you feel more alive, kept somewhere you will actually see it again, so you can start choosing more of them on purpose. This page is the whole idea in one place: why the small things matter more than the grand ones, what belongs on your list, how to share it with the people around you, and how to keep track of the life you are actually living.

About this guide: Written by Diane Corriette, Personal Growth Coach and founder of Inspirational Guidance. An ALIVE List is the free idea at the heart of everything here, the small, repeatable practice she uses with women who are not in crisis, just quietly ready to feel their own lives again.

From Diane

Mine, most days, is genuinely just good coffee made slowly instead of rushed. It sounds too small to be worth naming. Noticing it, on purpose, has done more for how my days feel than most of the bigger things I have tried. That is the whole secret of An ALIVE List. It is not about a dramatic new life. It is about seeing the one you already have.

When Life Starts Feeling Like Going Through the Motions

There is a particular kind of stuck that has no crisis attached to it. You are functioning. You are busy. And yet the days have flattened into a routine you never quite chose, where you can tell me everything you did this week and not one thing you actually felt. It is easy to assume something big has to change. Usually, it does not.

  • Your days blur together, busy but strangely forgettable.
  • You feel like you are just existing rather than living, without being able to say why.
  • Small pleasures pass you by because you are moving too fast to register them.
  • You keep waiting to feel more alive, as if it will arrive on its own.

None of this means anything is wrong with you. It means your attention has gone on autopilot, and attention is exactly the thing An ALIVE List is built to wake back up.

The Science: Why We Stop Seeing Our Own Lives

There is a good reason ordinary days fade, and it has been measured. In one study, researchers tracked 122 people across several months and matched where they went against how they felt. On the days people moved among more varied places, they reported noticeably more positive feelings, and the effect ran both ways: a lighter mood led to more exploring, and the exploring lifted the mood that followed.

The flip side is habituation. Anything that stays the same for long enough, the same commute, the same rooms, the same routine, gets filed by the brain as background and stops reaching your attention at all. That is why a life on repeat slowly stops being noticed. An ALIVE List works against both: it points your attention back at the small things, and gives you an easy way to add a little variety on purpose.

What An ALIVE List Actually Is

An ALIVE List is your personal, running list of the small things that make you feel more alive. Not a bucket list of once-in-a-lifetime moments, and not another set of goals to achieve. It is the everyday stuff: the walk you keep meaning to take, the book you keep meaning to start, the friend you keep meaning to call, the coffee you keep meaning to make slowly.

You write it down, you keep it somewhere you will see it, and you ask yourself one honest question on repeat: "Am I actually living it?" That is the whole practice. Small enough to start today, powerful enough to change how an ordinary week feels.

A bucket list says "someday"

Big, rare, and mostly in the future. Skydiving. A trip of a lifetime. Lovely, but it does not change today.

An ALIVE List says "today"

Small, repeatable, and available now. The things that make this ordinary day feel a little more like yours.

What Goes on Your List

If you are not sure what belongs on it, you are not alone. Most people have stopped noticing. Start by paying attention to the small moments that quietly lift you, and write down anything that makes you think "more of that." A few to get you going:

  • A slow coffee before the day starts, phone left in another room.
  • A ten-minute walk somewhere green, with no destination.
  • A song that always lifts you, played loud, on purpose.
  • A proper catch-up with the friend you keep meaning to call.
  • Something made with your hands: a loaf, a sketch, a messy first page.
  • Five minutes outside to actually feel the weather instead of hurrying through it.

Together

Do It Together: Share Your List and Start a Club

An ALIVE List is lovely on your own. It is better shared. The moment you say your list out loud to someone, it becomes real, and the moment other people start their own, the small things multiply. Here are the ways it comes alive with other people:

  • Share your list with one person. Tell a friend what is on it. Saying it out loud makes it real, and gives you someone quietly cheering you on.
  • Invite others to write their own. Friends, family, coworkers. It is a warm, no-pressure thing to hand someone: "write down the small things that make you feel alive."
  • Do the items together. Turn a solo entry into a shared afternoon. Your "learn to bake" becomes a Saturday with a friend.
  • Put a family list on the fridge. A shared list anyone in the house can add to, kids included.
  • Start one at work. An ALIVE List for the team, full of the small things that make an ordinary workday less grey.
  • Swap lists. Trade with a friend and each try one thing from the other's list.

Save It and Track Your List

A list only works if it does not vanish into a drawer. When you save An ALIVE List to your dashboard in the members area, it stays somewhere you will actually return to, and you can track where you are with it: what you have lived, what is waiting, and what you want more of.

  • Keep your list in one place instead of scattered across notes and good intentions.
  • Tick things off as you live them, so you can see the proof building up.
  • Run a short weekly check-in and ask the only question that matters: "Am I actually living it?"
  • Refresh the list each season, so habituation never gets the chance to flatten it again.

From Diane

The habit that actually rebuilt my sense of a good week was absurdly small: fifteen minutes, same afternoon each week, looking back at my list and asking whether I had lived any of it. On the weeks I skip it, I can usually tell by how quickly they blur. Keeping track is not admin. It is how you notice your own life is happening.

FAQ

What is An ALIVE List?

An ALIVE List is your running list of the small, everyday things that make you feel more alive. It is not a bucket list of once-in-a-lifetime moments and not a set of goals. It gives your small pleasures somewhere to live, so you notice them and choose more of them on purpose.

How is An ALIVE List different from a bucket list?

A bucket list is big, rare, and mostly in the future. An ALIVE List is small, repeatable, and available today. It is about making this ordinary day feel more like yours, rather than waiting for a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Why do the small things matter so much?

Because of something called habituation. Our brains tune out whatever stays the same, so a life on repeat literally stops being noticed. Deliberately noticing small things, and adding small bits of newness, is what switches your attention back on. Repetition, not intensity, is what changes how life feels.

How do I start An ALIVE List Club?

Gather a few people, meet over coffee or connect via WhatsApp/Telegram, share what you have each ticked off, and pick one small thing to do, either together or alone, before the next meet-up. A free Start An ALIVE List Club kit is coming soon. Register for free and you will be first to get it.

Where do I keep my list?

Anywhere you will actually see it. For the easiest option, save it to your dashboard in the members area, where you can track what you have lived, tick things off, and run a quick weekly check-in to make sure you are living it, not just listing it.
